How to be the right kind of hot mess…

Thankfully, the topic of the menopause is finally becoming more talked about, less taboo, the whispered awkwardness and furtive glances, like something out of Miranda are lessening!

The world of social media has embraced the need to raise the profile of what women go through during this challenge and some incredibly supportive groups have formed where women can find comfort, reassurance and guidance in belonging, helping to banish that sense of being isolated, invisible and powerless.

This sisterhood helps us to navigate through the best and worst of what the menopause throws at us, the physical and emotional changes. Stories of finding a new sense of bravery, a boldness that perhaps was lost in younger years, regained … extraordinary journeys to all four corners of the globe, new business ventures, new loves and new passions. Many women are finding a new style, a more ‘to hell with it’ attitude and feeling more fabulous, confident and sexy than ever before.

But before we feel all this strength, these positive surges and a sense of balance restored, we must go through the emotional struggle of the physiological changes that often hit first. While we talk about keeping cool, how to dress for the ‘power surge’ or hot flush, we don’t tend to talk as much about how to ensure our makeup works with our body.

I have a few simple steps to keep you from looking like the wrong kind of hot mess!

STEP 1: Prime

Essential for all skins, but key for menopausal.

Find a good moisturiser for your skin, something that will feed and nourish, and packed with ingredients that respond to hormonal challenges in the skin.  Less is more – lighter textures that help move with your skin, but have long-lasting durability, are key.

 Youth Lift Glow-Plexion, £26, Studio 10 Youth Lift Glow-Plexion, £26, Studio 10

Our Glow-Plexion collection is the perfect solution. You can blend them together to create a custom colour and apply all over your skin seamlessly.

Enriched with skin care actives, they help plump, lift, firm and add radiance to your complexion. The textures are light, dewy and give instant radiance to skin that is suffering with a loss of vitality.

By just blending colour correctors and complexion enhancers, you minimise the need for touch ups throughout the day when you feel you’re having a bit of a melt-down.

STEP 2: Perfect

Everyone is different and so are the extremes of the fire that you feel. As a general rule of thumb, avoid too much powder if you are suffering from ‘power surges’! Powder and sweat don’t mix and you’ll end up looking patchy and uneven and have to start all over again.

Instead, work with colour correctors and light reflecting concealers to create a more unified skin tone.

Age Defy Skin Perfector, £32, Studio 10 Age Defy Skin Perfector, £32, Studio 10

Our Age Defy Skin Perfector is the ideal solution. A combination of creamy, second skin formulations that help counter and neutralise pigment inconsistencies in the complexion, unifying skin tone to help create a more even, harmonious complexion. So if you are suffering with issues like redness and hormone break-outs, and as sleep becomes increasingly evasive, this is the best place to start in combatting dark circles.

Time Frame Foundation, £34, Delilah Time Frame Foundation, £34, Delilah

For days where my skin needs a little extra, I use Delilah Time Frame Future Resist Foundation. It has an SPF 20, there’s a great range of shades and it gives a flawless luminosity to my skin.

I love that it’s buildable so it feels lightweight, natural and breathable, while still giving me that sense of confidence when I need it.

STEP 3: Shape

Creating structure and definition to your features can add confidence in how you look. Brows are the bra of your eye area – well shaped brows help to lift skin tone, shaping and contouring the face, as well as maintaining a focal point.

Using the Brow Lift Perfecting Linerrecreate a natural brow with a universal ash tone that adapts with pressure to your natural colour and has the creamiest texture to glide across the skin.

 STEP 4: Shade

Finding eye colours that stay put when you’re in the throes of your own mini heat wave are few and far between.

It’s worth finding a good priming base that helps products increase their longevity on your skin. Why not try the Liquid I Foils. These creamy, lightweight, soothing cream eyeshadows apply as a wash of colour and you can build the intensity.

 Plumping Blush Glow-Plexion, £24, Studio 10 Plumping Blush Glow-Plexion, £24, Studio 10

They won’t budge, smudge or crease – they’re super sophisticated and give you confidence that you’re not going to find your eye makeup on your cheeks!

Plumping Blush Glow-Plexion is the perfect solution to add a pop of skin brightening colour, help lift the contour of your face and generally make you look healthy and wide awake! Smooth over the apples of the cheek. Now a word of caution, whatever blush you choose, avoid overdoing colour to the cheeks if you are suffering with reddening to your skin during any ‘heated moments’. Plumping Blush is a sheer wash of colour, so is buildable to your desired intensity.

A slick of our AMAZING 6-in-1 Mascara will help finish the look, longwearing, defining and volumising and loved by celebrities, influencers and beauty editors alike.
